How to
write a covering letter
Many
candidates have difficulty writing an effective
covering letter. A good covering letter can help
you to get the job.
A
covering letter is a necessity. Use a covering
letter is to:
- Summarize your skills and
strengths
- Express your enthusiasm
- Supply additional
information that can't be covered
properly in the resume (i.e. salary
expectations)
- Cover any concerns that
can't be explained in enough depth on the
resume (i.e. you can use it to explain
what would otherwise appear as job
hopping, or you can explain lengthy
abscences from the workforce, and other
concerns)
Things
to avoid
Self focused letters. These are
letters that focuses too much on their needs (i.e
minimum salary demands) and not on the employer's
needs.
A
letter that does not add any value. These are
short letters that merely states that the CV is
enclosed or just repeats info already on the
resume. Unfortunately most covering letters fall
into this category.
'Arrogant'
letter that tries to to tell the employer how
the company should run its business.
A
'creative' letter might be ok for creative
positions such as those in PR or advertising
only.
Letters
that try to use 'big words'. These are the
letters that tries to impress a reader with
phrases people do not typically use in normal
conversations such as 'in the furtherance of', or
'for your perusal'.
