Cover Letter Tips
These are some tips for
sending a good email cover letter:
Use the subject line
properly. Dont waste the subject line
of your email by just using something boring like
the job requisition number. Instead, use the
subject line to entice the reader to look at your
cover letter.
Keep your cover letter
concise. Your cover letter shouldn't be
longer than one screen in length.
Use keywords. Add
into the letter buzzwords relvant to the job you
are seeking. Since your info may be stored into a
database, using keywords will improve the chance
that your cover letter and resume will come up in
future searches.
Stick with plain text
(ASCII). Do away with formatting by saving
the file as "plain text".
Limit line length.
Lines should be no more than 60 characters in
length. Although some email packages
automatically do word wrap you should check. You
dont want a cover letter that displays as
fragmented on multiple lines.
Use proper grammar.
Just because its an email, doesnt
mean you should shouldnt use proper grammar.
Avoid various shortcuts used in everyday emails.
Proofread before
sending. Use a spellcheck and take the time
to thoroughly proofread it.
