How to keep your skills
sharp
How do you keep your skills sharp if your
current position doesn't allow you to take
advantage of all of your skills?
Take ownership of your own self-development and
skill upgrading by seeking challenging
assignments inside and outside of work.
To stay current, consider improving your skills
through reading, courses, or even mentoring.
Volunteer - there are many charitable/non-profit
organizations that need people to help in
leadership positions, fundraising, special
events, etc. These types of activities can
provide opportunities to demonstrate leadership,
sales abilities, organizational skills, etc. This
type of involvement can also serve as a great
networking opportunity. Volunteer to help out at
your place of employment by joining in on
cross-functional projects and activities.
Stay informed of new technology, trends, and
ideas by reading trade magazines and relevant
books, and by attending seminars and workshops. Consider if your skills
are not being used because they might not be up
to date. If this is the case then update these
skills by taking courses at local schools and
colleges for example.
Join relevant industry and professional
organizations.
Take initiative by asking for or creating
opportunities at work. Ask your manager for
additional work.
You may also wish to look for another more
challenging job with another employer.
